1. Understanding the C: Drive (System Drive)
Your cloud desktop always includes a C: drive, which contains:
- Windows
- Program Files
- System files
- Installed applications
- User profiles (Desktop, Documents, Downloads)
β Recommended size:
200 GB SSD
(default for Vying.io cloud desktops)
β Best for:
- Programs
- System tools
- Browsers
- App installations
β Not recommended for:
- Large company file storage
- Big PDFs
- Massive downloads
- Database backups
- Video/image archives
Keeping the C: drive clean ensures your cloud desktop stays fast and stable.

2. Optional Data Drive (D: Drive or Custom Drive Letter)
Some clients need a dedicated drive for:
- Shared company files
- Project folders
- Accounting archives
- Databases
- Heavy data storage
We can create a D: drive (or any other letter) that is:
- Separate from Windows
- Large enough for data
- Easy to expand
- Safe for backups
- Easier to restore
β Example sizes:
- 100 GB
- 200 GB
- 500 GB
- 1 TB+
You can request more anytime.

3. Where Should You Store Your Files?
β
Safe locations:
- D:\ (data drive, if you have one)
- C:\Shared (if used for collaboration)
- A mapped network drive (if using multiple desktops)
β
Avoid storing important data in:
- Desktop
- Downloads
- Documents
- Temp folders
- AppData
- C:\Users\YourName\AnythingVeryImportant
These folders grow fast and fill the C: drive before you notice.
π¨
4. Checking Free Space
To see how much space you have:
- Open File Explorer
- Right-click C:
- Select Properties
- View Used and Free space
If your C: drive drops below 15β20 GB free, performance may degrade.
πͺ
5. Cleaning Up Space (Safe Methods)
β 1. Empty Downloads
Clients often forget 10+ GB of installers in here.
β 2. Remove unused software
Control Panel β Programs β Uninstall unused apps.
β 3. Clean temporary files
Press Start β type Disk Cleanup.
β 4. Move large files to D: or Shared folders
Keep C: for system + apps only.
π₯
6. What NOT to Delete (to avoid breaking Windows)
Never delete:
- Program Files
- Windows folder
- AppData
- System32 (obviously)
- DLL files
- Driver folders
- Anything you donβt understand
Deleting system files can break your cloud desktop.
If in doubt β message us.

8. Backup Strategy for Storage
Your cloud desktop is protected by:
- Snapshots
- Backups
- Restore points
But backups only protect what exists inside the drives.
So keep your data in:
- D:\Data
- Shared company folders
- Mapped drives
- Organized directories
Not inside temp folders or Desktop.

9. How Storage Works Across Multiple Cloud Desktops
If you have more than one cloud desktop:
Best practice:
Use a shared drive or network folder:
\\192.168.x.x\CompanyData
Then map it on all desktops as:
Z:
This keeps all data centralized and prevents duplicates.
β Summary
Your storage setup is simple:

- Donβt store large files here
D: drive (optional)
- For company data
- Easy to expand
- Best place for large files
