Overview
Your cloud desktop is protected by multiple layers of backup technology.
Even if something goes wrong — accidental deletion, software crash, a bad update — we can restore your desktop quickly.
This article explains:
- What backups we take
- What restore points are
- How long they are kept
- What happens during a restore
- What data is safe
- What data YOU should keep organized
🟩
1. Snapshots (Instant Restore Points)
Snapshots capture your entire cloud desktop at a specific moment in time.
They allow us to roll your machine back instantly — like undoing a big mistake.
✔ What snapshots protect:
- System settings
- Installed applications
- Windows updates
- Files and folders
- Everything currently on the machine
✔ When we create snapshots:
- Before major system changes
- Before upgrades
- Before troubleshooting
- When you request one
- On a fixed internal schedule
✔ When to request a snapshot:
- Before installing major software
- Before large company imports
- Before risky operations
Snapshots are fast, lightweight, and reliable.
🟦
2. Daily / Weekly Backups
These are deeper backups stored securely inside Vying.io’s infrastructure.
✔ What backups protect:
- Your files
- Your programs
- Your system state
- Everything on your drives (C: and D:)
✔ Purpose of backups:
If something catastrophic happens —
even if the virtual machine itself gets corrupted —
we can restore your cloud desktop from a clean backup.
🟧
3. How Long We Keep Backups
Retention depends on your plan, but typically:
- Snapshots: 7+ days
- Daily backups: 7–14 days
- Weekly backups: 30 days
- Logs & security data: up to 90 days (GDPR compliant)
If your business needs longer retention, we can extend it.
🟨
4. Restore Options
We offer 3 levels of restoration:
✔ Level 1: Snapshot Restore (Instant)
Restores your machine to a specific point from the last few days.
Takes a few minutes.
Ideal for:
- Broken apps
- Bad installers
- Windows update issues
- System instability
✔ Level 2: File Recovery
We recover individual files or folders from backups.
No need to restore the whole machine.
Ideal for:
- Deleted documents
- Overwritten Excel files
- Lost folders
✔ Level 3: Full Machine Backup Restore
Restores the entire virtual machine from a deeper backup.
Used only if:
- Something became severely corrupted
- Drive structures broke
- Malware or ransomware infected the system
This is the “safety net behind the safety net.”
🟪
5. How to Request a Restore
Just message us:
“Please restore my desktop to [date/time] snapshot/backup.”
We’ll confirm:
- Which restore point you want
- The amount of data impacted
- Any files created after that moment
Then we restore it — usually within minutes.
🟥
6. What Backups Do NOT Cover
To avoid confusion:
❌ Backups do not include:
- USB drives plugged into your local PC
- Files stored only in OneDrive (if not synced)
- Files saved on local devices outside the cloud desktop
- Temporary files created by some browser apps
- Data lost due to incorrect save locations (ex: saving to non-existent paths)
❗ Important:
If your app doesn’t save to the cloud desktop’s C: or D: drive, it won’t be backed up.
🟫
7. Best Practices to Keep Your Data Safe
✔ Store important files in:
- D:\Data (if you have a data drive)
- A mapped network drive
- Close-to-root folders, not deep in AppData
✔ Avoid storing important data here:
- Desktop
- Downloads
- Temporary folders
- AppData
- Random folders inside C:\Users
These get messy, grow fast, and often cause “disk full” issues.
✔ For teams
Use a shared drive or shared folder, not individual desktops.
🟩
8. What Happens If the Machine Fails Completely?
In rare cases:
- corruption
- software failure
- Windows breaking
- malware infection
We simply:
- Restore from snapshot → if possible
- Restore from backup → if deeper restore needed
- Create a fresh desktop and migrate your data → worst-case scenario
Your data always has multiple layers of protection.
